Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Curb Appeal!

Spring has sprung, and it’s time to send Old Man Winter packing! In the spirit of the season of renewal, many people perform an annual “Spring Cleaning” ritual. The home gets a deep, thorough cleaning from top to bottom after being closed up for the winter.  Infrequent chores like cleaning ceiling fan blades and washing windows get tackled as we shrug off the last of winter’s frosty breath and anticipate spending more time outdoors.
After you clean every nook and cranny in your home, what about taking that energy and sense of renewal outside?  An attractive exterior says “Welcome!” whether it’s to visitors or potential buyers.
Here are a few tips for giving your home a facelift for spring:
  Start at the curb!
  •   Walk to the street and take a look at the front of your home from the public’s perspective. Do you have overgrown shrubs that block windows or the front entry? Trim them! Prune out any dead or cold-damaged branches. This will encourage fresh new growth.
  • Is it time for a fresh coat of paint? New paint can make even an older home look newer. Pressure washing can often be a good substitute for painting!
  • Consider a new paint color for your front door.  Did you know blue is the most popular entry-door color in the U.S.?
  • Add some color! Annuals are an inexpensive way to brighten any landscape, and your local garden center can recommend which ones are best suited for your growing conditions. Frame your entry with some colorful potted plants.
  • Clean cobwebs off the light fixtures and eaves, and from around windows.
Wash the garage door. They get dusty and dirty over time, and washing it is almost as dramatic as a new coat of paint.
  • Sweep and edge walkways, and clear them of any weeds or debris that could be a tripping hazard.
  • Clean gutters of debris that may inhibit water flow.
  • Add a colorful Welcome mat at your front door
